Scope and Contents The DeWitt Lipe - Cherokee Strip Papers consist of autographs, autograph transcriptions, and typescript letters and documents of DeWitt Lipe, Treasurer of the Cherokee Nation. In general, the papers related to the Cherokee Nation's taxation and licensing requirements of Texas stockmen who grazed cattle on Indian lands west of the Arkansas River, known as the Cherokee Strip, on their way to the Kansas stockyards. Approximately 600 letters, feldbriefs and feldpostcartes to and from Alois, Gottleib Jr., and Max--three sons serving in the German Army--and their family. Many letters are from France, approximately 130 of which are from Gottlieb Jr. written from an English POW camp.

The diary of Lieutenant Ed Granger from Aug 1917 through Jun 1919. Lt. Granger was a dentist and served the 138th Infantry Regt., 35th Infantry Div. Granger writes about his experiences in WWI. He trained at Camp Doniphan, Oklahoma.


A manuscript diary, written is dos-a dos fashion, several pages have been torn out.
