After serving in the US Navy and for a time as a police officer and firefighter in Tulsa, Paul earned his B.S. and M.S. in botany at the University of Tulsa. After completing a Ph.D. in botany at the University of Oklahoma, he returned to the University of Tulsa to teach from 1964 to 1987.

Scope and Contents Harriet G. Barclay was Professor of Botany at the University of Tulsa, teaching part-time at the University of Tulsa between 1929 and 1942, and later assuming a full-time position in 1942. In 1949, she was promoted to Professor of Botany and in 1953 was appointed Chair of the Botany department. In 1958 she received a National Science Foundation grant for a year of botanical research in the Andes of Colombia, Ecuador and Venezuela.
