Biography

Charles Joseph La Trobe, CB was appointed in 1839 superintendent of the Port Phillip District of New South Wales and, after the establishment in 1851 of the colony of Victoria, he became its first lieutenant-governor. La Trobe was a strong supporter of religious, cultural and educational institutions.

This is Latrobe’s diary of his trip in Indian country in 1832-1833 partly in the company of Washington Irving and Henry Ellsworth. This diary was later expanded into the volumes of Rambler in North America, published in 1836 by Seeley and Burnside in London and Harper Brothers, New York.
