Scope and Contents "...The story in the Cosmopolitan is entirely imaginary. Whitman never lost any money of mione and I did not get one hundred dollars a month...." Handwritten notes (author unknown) on verso: Written in 1902. Doyle then an elderly man. Letter written to Laurens Maynard refutes an article by Elbert Hubbard in Cosmopolitan. Story to the effect that Whitman was made caretaker of Doyle's monthly salary $100 - Had his pocket picked and Doyle, instead of becoming frantic took it...
