Biography

Joan Blaeu was a Dutch cartographer born in Alkmaar, the son of cartographer Willem Blaeu.

Scope and Contents

Hand colored copper engraved regional map of the Annandale region of southern lowland Scotland, around the Solway Firth. It is based on Timothy Pont's survey of Scotland by Timothy Pont conducted between 1583 and 1601 and revised by William Gordon for inclusion in Volume 5 of Blaeu's Atlas, beginning in 1654. Latin text on verso.

Thought to have been removed from Willem and Joan Blaeu's Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, Vol. 2. This map was one of Blaeu's first atlas maps, appearing in his first Appendix in 1630. On verso is Latin text.
