Abbot, Howard Stanbury, 1844-1926

Howard Stanbury Abbot was born to Samuel Cheever Abbot and Maria Louisa Gilbert Abbot, sister of Charles Champion Gilbert and Samuel A. Gilbert, both Union Generals in the Civil War. He was also a cousin of famed architect Cass Gilbert.
Abbot served as an enlisted man in the 78th Ohio Infantry from 1861-10-28 - 1863-10-16.
He was a lawyer for the U.S. Supreme Court.

Scope and Contents Handwritten and signed letter from Charles Gilbert to his nephew "How". How is almost certainly Howard Stanbury Abbot.
"...Well now then for the [hunt]--The party was made up of three officers and seven soldiers with a wagon tents [etc] we were mounted on mules and ponies and had two first rate dogs....This day we made a long journey about thirty miles seeing buffalo deeer antelope and the like--but we killed only three buffalo...."
