Scope and Contents

Colored lithograph of "Seige of Vera Cruz, March 1847, by the U. S. Army and Navy. The bombardment commenced on the 22nd March at 4 ½ o’clock in the afternoon P. M. and was incessant day and night until the morning of the 26th at which time overtures were made by the enemy for the capitulation of hostility, and also the castle of San Juan de Ulloa (The Gibraltar of America) – on the 27th the garrisons of both city and castle surrendered as prisoners of war to the victorious arms of the United States. U. S. Army under Genl. Scott 12,100. U. S. Navy under Com. Perry. U. S. losses 15 killed, and 50 wounded.”
