"Oklahoma Race Riot", 1931 - 1939
Scope and Contents
Photocopies of three editions of Frances W. Prentice, "Oklahoma Race Riot," an article first published in Scribner's Magazine, Vol. XC, No. 2, August 1931, 151-157, as part of "Life in the United States," a selection of writings "for personal experience or observation at first hand concerned with an aspect of American life." It was then reprinted in a volume titled "Life in the United States. A Collection of Narratives of Contemporary American Life from First-Hand Experience or Observation" (New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1933, 67-77), and later in "Tellers of Tales. 100 Short Stories from the United States, England, France, Russia, and Germany," Selected and with an Introduction by W. Somerset Maugham (New York: Doubleday, Doran and Company, 1939, 1519-1526). The article contains a dramatic narration of the race Riot, as well as of its immediate aftermath and of the tendency to not talk about it in town after a certain time. It include descriptions of cold blood murders and of the burning of Greenwood.
