Scope and Contents

Ashley Parrish, "Horror of Riot is Told," in Tulsa World, November 21, 1999, News, p. 1, printed from an internet archive. The article uses the story of the recently deceased Riot survivor Lillie Rice, who spoke of her memories of the Riot for the first time at 104 years old, months before dying, and the impact the story had on her granddaughter Cheryl Rice Cherry, to anticipate the impact of the Tulsa Race Riot Commission research and report. The report would be turned to the State Legislature in January. In the following dates, Eddie Faye Gates would turn her report about 65 living riot survivors to the Commission, and other members would soon finalize their own about the number of the dead, mass graves in Oaklawn Cemetry, and the loss of property. The article elaborates on some of the historical lead that point towards mass graves in the cemetery, and states that the Commission was awaiting for the later radar tests before voting on whether to dig. Democratic Representative Don Ross would then ask for a joinmt House-Senate committee review of the Commission's findings.
