Biographical / Historical
On 1899 April 29, 1899 union miners blew up the plant that supplied power with which to work the mines in the Coeur d'Alenes. Governor Steunenberg asked for federal aid. General Merriam was ordered into the Coeur d'Alenes with 650 men. He established military rule, not allowing union men to work in the mines. Governor Steunenberg gained the enmity of the Western Federation of Miners, originating the trouble which led to his murder.
