"Dearest Dame Rebecca: Since writing to you two days ago I came across several details which might both interest and amuse you. To start with: you were the first woman to be elected in 1967 Vice-President of the Library. For almost a century the L.L. was by and large a men's club. At the death of Meredith in 1909, Lord Haldane was elected Vice-President and towards the end of the Committee meeting a suffragette rose and shouted: 'Mr Haldane, when are you going to carry out the wishes of Mr Meredith and give women the vote?' No reply was given and the 'interrupter' was persuaded to leave..."
