Pastor emeritus of Fifth Avenue Presbyterian church in New York City. Kirkland is a former pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Tulsa and served as president of the American Bible Society. The Welch collection will hold Kirkland's materials jointly with Princeton Theological Seminary.

The initial contributor to the Welch Family Collection is well-known Presbyterian pastor and Biblical Scholar, Dr. Eugene Peterson, whose central work is The Message, an earthy, vibrant and contemporary translation of the Holy Scriptures; now retired, was for many years James M. Houston Professor of Spiritual Theology at Regent College in Vancouver, British Columbia. Peterson also served as founding pastor of Christ is Our King Presbyterian Church in Bet Air, Maryland.
