Scope and Contents

Consists of 72 autograph letters and 5 Christmas cards (most accompanied by their envelopes) to friends and colleagues including Ian Hamilton, H. A. Rappaport, Alan Ross, and Roger Senhouse; also included is a cablegram to Hartley from Harvey Curtis Webster. The collection also holds editions of Hartley's books, books to which he contributed, and secondary critical appraisals, and an extensive run of Weekend Review, a journal to which Hartley made regular contributions.

Biographical / Historical

Leslie Poles Hartley was born on 30 December 1895 in Whittlesey, Cambridgeshire. He is also known as L. P. Hartley. He was a British novelist and short story writer. During his studies at Oxford University, he met several writers that would have an impact on his work. His best-known novels are the "Eustace and Hilda trilogy" and "The Go-Between."
