Scope and Contents

The collection is arranged into 5 series:

Series 1: Zoe Tilghman: correspondence, drafts of her writings (Bill Tilghman: Fifty Years a Peace Officer and Outlaw Gangs of Oklahoma), short stories and poems.

Series 2: William M. "Bill" Tilghman: correspondence, draft of his writings ("Outlaw History"), court documents relating to the trial of Wiley Lynn (man who allegedly killed Tilghman).

Series 3: Tilghman children and their spouses: correspondence and personal documents, photos.

Series 4: Genealogies, photographs, and press cuttings.

Series 5: Artefacts: Family members' personal effects including William M. "Bill" Tilghman's cartridge belt.

Biographical / Historical

Zoe Agnes (Stratton) Tilghman was born on Nov. 15, 1880, in Greenwood County, Kansas. When she was 22 years old, she married William M. "Bill" Tilghman. She was a school teacher when they married. They had three children. She wrote her husband's biography "Marshall of the Last Frontier," which was published in 1949. She wrote several books about the Old West. She died in June of 1964.
