Inez Lacey Evans manuscripts, 1900-1987

 Collection
Identifier: 1988-004

Scope and Contents

The Inez Lacey Evans manuscripts consist of handwritten and typed manuscripts for The Spent Arrow by Inez Lacey Evans, the handwritten manuscripts of “The Story Behind The Story” by Robley D. Evans, publication blurbs, photographs of Anadarko, Oklahoma (c.1900), research material, and correspondence.

The Spent Arrow is a book of historical fiction about a pre-Territory settlement on the Washita River near what is now known as Anadarko, Oklahoma. The original manuscript was written by Inez Lacey Evans and completed in 1940; but when attempts to publish the book failed, the manuscript was shelved. Thirty-eight years after her death, Mrs. Evans' husband, Robley, resurrected the manuscript and with the help of nephew and publisher, Robert L. Evans, began to revise and edit it for successful publication in 1987. “The Story Behind the Story,” an handwritten manuscript epilogue written by Robley Evans in 1978, is a brief account of his life with Inez and the impact her writing of the book had on their lives.
