Content Description

Manuscript notebook in Hebrew and English. Content consists largely of an elementary grammar and dictionary of Biblical Hebrew, including Hebrew words for entries suggesting Cherokee culture (such as quiver, bow, buffalo, and red blood man.) An assortment of notes laid-in, mostly for use in catechism but also including receipts for books, an iron stove, groceries and various household articles dated from 1828-1845.

Records a wedding celebrated by Roberts in Valley Towns on August 10, 1822. Two separate registers of marriages bound-in performed both prior to his departure for North Carolina and others subsepuent to his return to Middletown, PA around 1824.

Biographical / Historical

Thomas Roberts, missionary to the Cherokees in Valley Towns, Cherokee Nation (North Carolina), was head of a team of volunteers recruited from his congregation in Great Valley, Pennsylvania in 1821 to establish a co-educational school for the Cherokees.
