Cookery and recipe book, approximately 1689-1760
Scope and Contents
17th-18th-century recipes and medicinal receipts bound together ; many entries are in a variety of different hands, some signed ; there are at least 3 ownership signatures: 'Thomas Moyle [and family]', 'Receipts by my lady Culham. Joseph Barker. 1686', and 'Mary Jones Book - Mary Jones Har [sic] Book - Given har [sic] by Madam Smith'.
In total, the volume contains approximately sixty-four recipes, primarily of a cookery nature [e.g. 'To preserve green Fruits', 'To make a carraway cake.'], as well as a few of a medicinal slant [e.g. 'A most admirable plaster for burning, scalding or any inflamation, old sore, or wound']. Many of the recipes indicate their source; e.g. 'My lady Martin's receipt'.
