Artist Alfred Jacob Miller, landscape and portrait painter, was especially noted for his studies of the Indians of the Rocky Mountain area. Born in Baltimore, Miller studied painting with Thomas Sully in 1831-32. In 1837 he met Capt. William Drummond Stewart while he was in New Orleans and accompanied him on an expedition into the Rocky Mountains.
