I.J. Clendinnen WWI-era scrapbook, 1910-1922

Scope and Contents Scrapbook/photo album of I.J.Clendinnen of the Queen Mary's Army Auxiliary Corps. Contents include photo-postcards, B/W snapshots, newspaper clippings, postage stamps, dance cards, menus and programmes. All items are pasted onto gray paper scrapbook pages. The album is covered in fabric of geometric design and tied with a black cord with wooden beads.

Scope and Contents The Sally Appel papers consist of the writings, war camp documents, correspondence, photographs, and publications (including a complete run the newspaper, Der Vergessene Michel) relating to Sally Appel, a German soldier held prisoner by the French during World War I. While a prisoner, Appel was permitted by the French camp commandant to create the newspaper, Der Vergessene Michel, 14 issues of which were lettered and illustrated on mimeograph masters and published between October 1919 and...

Subjects include ground-based weaponry (French, German), observation balloons and Zeppelins (American, German); aeroplanes (German, American); naval vessels and ferries; ruins (France, Belgium, Germany); soldiers. Also among the collection are approximately 81 snapshots from a later period, circa 1935, of barracks, airplanes, airports, etc.
