American business executive, University of Kansas booster, and civic philanthropist of Bartlesville, Oklahoma. "Boots" Adams began his career with the Phillips Petroleum Company in 1920 as a clerk in the warehouse department. In 1938 he was elected president of the Phillips Petroleum Company and was one of the nation's youngest leaders of a major corporation. He continued to serve as the company's chief executive until 1964.
