"Dear Madam, I think you will see from the "Stoic" (p. 342) that "carpe diem" is mentioned as a deviation from Voiture's form which is the most approved, and (in my humble opinion) the best. Of course no one can say Voiture must be followed, any more than one can say the Guittonian sonnet must be the invariable mode; but both have the sanction of the best judges..."
