"Dear N.G., I hope I have not chosen an inappropriate moment to address you after a long and regretful silence. I won't trouble you with all my only-too-valid excuses for not keeping in touch as closely as I could wish. I have had much to contend with - an entirely unsuccessful operation, a great deal of work and correspondence of the less entertaining and more unavoidable kind, and many distresses, of which the worst has been the suicide of a most dear friend [processor's note: penciled notation indicates that this was Basil Taylor]..."
