"Dear Mrs. Philips, Thank you very much indeed for your lettere explaining the matters about which I had enquired of Mrs. Sharp, whom I am sorry to hear has been having such a beastly time. Failing to hear from to[sic] you to the contrary, I shall take it that this cancer diagnosis took place in 1900 - the date Mr. Paul Bland gave me, and that Mr. Housman was wrong about a party at which H.G. Wells was present. He is evidently confusing this "farewell" party with some other which he attended..."
