"Dear Mr. Ellis, (I wish I knew whether this is quite the politest form of address for you, and were not haunted by suspicions that I ought to say Dr. Ellis, or Dr. Havelock Ellis), Thankyou[sic] very much indeed for the letter I received from you last week. I have copied it with interest and return it with gratitude. It was written - I think as you do - in 1888, probably before the memorable incident about which Olive Schreiner wrote to you from Alassio..."
