"Dear Dr. Bland, My biography has now reached the year 1899, and I arrive at a point where I must put to you the inevitable question - am I to be allowed to mention the "secret of your birth" or not? I wrote to your sister, who, of course, came into the story much earlier, and asked her views in reference to herself. She had no objection to my telling the truth (suppressing, I need hardly say, any evidence by which the name of her mother might be guessed)..."
