"Dear Madam, I have the honour to inform you that I am writing a biography of the late "E. Nesbit," under an Agreement with Messrs. Ernest Benn Ltd., the present publishers of her works for children. A letter from you has been given me by Mr. Tucker, in which you condole him on the death of his wife. I therefore assume that you knew her personally, and if this is so I should be most grateful to you if you could furnish me with any recollections of her which you may have..."
