"Dear Mrs Phillips, I am sending you with this a copy of my first work, my Anacreon, which I thought might interest you as we had such a vigorous talk about poetry the last time we met. Please accept it "without prejudice" - meaning that even if I were to shower the gold of Ophir on you instead of these humble and undistinguished verses, you would still be entitled to hoist the flag of battle against anything I might writen in my present work..."
