"Dear Sir, I have the honour to inform you that I am writing a biography of the late E. Nesbit under an agreement with Messrs. Ernest Benn. In the month of E. Nesbit's death you published in the pages of Punch a very delightful obituary poem which I understand was by Mr. Charles Graves. I should very much like to reproduce these verses in my book if you will be so kind as to give me your permission..."
