"My dear John, Thanks for your letter. I am very much obliged to you for writing to me: because there are no boys here with whom I can make friends. They are all old persons who spend their whole time in hunting or in studying fearfully difficult history-books. The consequence is that I am obliged to go and make friends in the farm-yard which belongs to this house..."
