"Dear Madam, I am very grateful for your kind letter received this morning, and for the information it contains which sheds considerable light on E. Nesbit's views of the Woman's Suffrage question. I had been told that she disapproved entirely of equal political status for women, but evidently this was not the case, and she merely refused to join the movement because she thought it might do some immediate injury to a cause she favoured still more..."

"Dear Madam - I am afraid this is a very meagre contribution to your biography. It is a letter from E. Nesbit in answer to one of mine asking her to sign a memorial from authors to the Prime Minister, requesting him to give facilities for the passage into law of the "Conciliation Bill" for woman suffrage, which, if passed, would have given the vote to about a million women. Large numbers of those who supported the Bill were of course Socialists who wanted the sex barrier broken down and knew there was no chance of doing it at that time by an adult measure..."

It is hardly necessary for me to tell you how grateful I should be for any recollections of her which you may be able to give mea[sic] and also for any letters or other documents you may have in your possession..."
