Historical Notes

Background written by Sid Huttner: “This file was created in the early 1990s by Maggi Randolph, a woman who had worked in the University's public relations department during Henneke's term as President of the University, since deceased. She worked from a photocopy of Henneke's typescript, making limited (but unspecified) changes and additions. She mentions in one letter, for example, changing ''Negro" to "black." The tide, too, and title page, are Randolph's: Henneke's manuscript, the ribbon of which is with his papers in University Archives, is untitled. Henneke does not like Randolph's title but has not suggested one he prefers.

“Randolph presented a print-out of her work to Robert Donaldson in 1991. This eventually made its way to the library, and I asked Randolph for a copy of the machine-readable file as well. The 5.25-inch diskettes of the period eventually arrived. I concatenated and moved the files to the software we were using at the time, later to WordPerfect 5.1, and now to Word 6.0. In doing, this I was able to run a spell-check and to search and replace miss-typed (or inconsistently typed) names. I also removed Randolph's formatting for print-out (margins, paging, etc.) to produce a text more easily manipulated electronically.

“I made no substantive editorial changes, however. Given the changes made by Randolph, and the quite different appearance of the text here, readers are advised to check Henneke's original manuscript whenever his precise words are in question . ............... Sidney F. Huttner, Curator, 18 November 1998”
