"Max Jacob must have been one of the extraordinary converts to Catholicism that the twentieth century has seen. Next-door neighbour [sic] to Picasso in Montmartre in 1904, Max Jacob became the intimate friend of Apollinaire as well, and together these two were soon the leading figures in the esprit nouveau in literature, working closely with the young cubist painters centered on Picasso..."
