"THE MERCURE DE FRANCE seems to have preserved an honourable publishing tradition of mislaying authors manuscripts. It has been recounted recently in these columns ('The New Spirit', April 11, 1968) how the Mercure discovered at the back of a drawer, in 1909, the manuscript of an important poem by Aollinaire submitted nearly a year previously. But in the case of Alfred Jarry, who was no longer around to pester the editor, it excelled itself. In 1947 a dusty package of manuscript was found filed away..."
