Arrangement of the first three series
It is important to understand that the Andre Deutsch papers have been sent to us in two accessions, one in 1988 and one in 1995. The first accession has been arranged alphabetically by author. It is not clear how many attempts have been made to organize the second accession, and whether the collections current organization was established by those at Andre Deutsch or someone in special collections. Presumably, the collection came to us in two series, "Editorial/Publicity" with individaual files arranged alphabetically and "Production/Manuscript" with individual files arranged alphabetically. Oddly, however, there remains a third series of files arranged in alphabetical order that includes "editorial, publicity, production, and manuscript" materials. It is unclear if someone pulled these files (which contain few recognizable names with the exception of John Updike) or if this was sent to us in this condition. To make matters more confusing, any original continuity in the 1995 Andre Deutsch boxes was disrupted when water flooded our archival tower. This third series could represent works published after Rosenthal assumed control of Andre Deutsch, but more research would be needed to confirm this claim. Because this collection is so large and because of an archival desire to preserve any original integrity with which the collection was sent to us, I have not combined these three series into one large series to parallel the first accession. I have kept them as three individual series. Unfortunately, this may mean that patrons of this collection will need to look in three (or even four) different series to gain a complete sense of the materials.
