Gray's Atlas Map of Indian Territory, 1872
Scope and Contents
Map shows Native American tribal lands, rivers and creeks.
A typed note included with the map reads: Notable for including lands between the Arkansas and the Washita, 'ceded to the United States' by treaties of 1866-7 by the Seminoles, Choctaws and Chickasaws, Creeks - three tracts, bounded. These do not appear as Government Land in the 1883 official Map of Indian Reservations but as the new home of the Cheyennes and Arapahoes (shifed s.w.) and of the Wichitas. Iowas and Kickapoos, no where on this map unless in the unnamed n.w. portion 'GREER' appears.
The Canadian District was part of the Cherokee Country by 1883. The Shawnee reservation of this map was the Modoc by 1883. The Apaches (here with the Kiowas and Comanches) disappear in the 1883 map.
