Scope and Contents
Oct 15th Tues. 1918. Heard that German's had received 7 days to remove artillery back to regional line and then arange for peace. We heard wagons rumbling during the night. Nasty [?] [?] by negroes. Saw 2 German post cards. 15th N. G. with 372nd. Chow for supper coffee bread rice & bacon. Orders are to be ready to move in 2 days for active front. No candles to be had. We are in complete darkness to move about in.
Oct. 16th Wed. Left at 12 midnight after we had taken ammunition down to barn on road. Lieut. Johnston of intelligence dept. shot by machine gun while on reconnaissence at 5 p.m. the 15th. We left after being relieved by the French for the barn waited till 2 a.m. for Lieut. Boykin. We marched to [Bricommount]. Stopped in barn there till the others came. Left at 4 a.m. for St. Die. Met 2 ditched wagons and left. Got letter from Alfreda.
