Scope and Contents

Nov. 9th 1918 Sat. Received orders to advance at 8 o'clock at 5 A.M. got hard tack & 1 can of [bully] beef for each 2 1/2 men and I left w/ Lieut. Stillwell's platoon in reserve (1 day's rations only) We took our ammunition guns machine guns water boxes gunner's gas mask tripod & grub. I carried 1 box of ammunition, gunner's gas mask & 1 bag with 4 cans of bully beef I swiped. I joined Wilson's at last minute, we walked through a system of trenches after leaving the Melz & Verdun railroad track and came out on top of the hill and down again into a valley. We carried on through a village which the Germans deserted and 5 or 6 sets of bared wire on the double quick We went over the top of a trench deserted and through a swamp and then we went to the left behind a forest (Germans bombarded a French wagon on the road on the hill as we were, Sargent Sam Jones deployed us
