[Continued from page 48] gun position. I was with Corporal Wilson & Major Steve & Lieut. Lacey Wilson & anohter & Stilwell all in one big shell hole. While there we heard of the death of Capt. Loughlin & ? and Lieut. [Tate] and 4 others and the 1st Platoon of Co. B shot to pieces & the 2nd partly. Major Steve sent a carrier pigeon at 7.30 A.M. saying we cannot advance [?] - [?] because we are held up by our own artillery barrage & the enemies machine gun nests in front of us. We need assistance as we have no water or food and no airplanes. We were relieved 6 P.M. by the 321st & Co. A & C we hastily took advantage of this welcome relief and reached our own dugouts by 9 P.M. Dead man's Hill I stood watch from 12 to 3 with Abner.
