Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

The collection is comprised of correspondence between British author David Gascoyne and his friends and colleagues, and manuscript and typescript drafts of his writings. The correspondence has been arranged alphabetically by correspondent, followed by unidentified correspondence and four groups of letters arranged in the categories of "British painter friends," British poet contemporaries, "Literary friends and acquaintances," and "Requests for permission to quote" as organized by Gascoyne. The writings, consisting of autograph and typescript drafts of novels, plays, articles, lectures and verse, have been arranged alphabetically by title and are followed by the manuscript notebooks which have been arranged in the order in wich Gascoyne numbered them. Fragments of some of these items can be found within the 15 manuscript notebooks and a scrapbook filled with press cuttings of appearances of Gascoyne's articles and reviews of his work by others, also within the collection. Also included in the collection is miscellaneous material comprised of an unidentified poem, table of contents for a book of poems, a radio monologue, biographical blurbs, and a bibliography.
