Series 1: Research files

Identifier: 1988.012.1

Scope and Contents

Series 1 is the primary sequence for Ellmann's correspondence and research files. In addition to name, possibly useful information about correspondents or about the contents of the file has been recorded as a note indicated by brackets [ ].
[ n ] indicates either that only a first name is present (or was decipherable) or that there is uncertainty about the correctness of our transcription. We are grateful to readers for correcting and extending both names and bracketed information, and we welcome further advice particularly as regards less well known persons.
Series I contains four important sub-series -- for James Joyce, the Norton Anthology, Oscar Wilde and W.B. Yeats -- wherein are lodged research materials, correspondence and draft writings which derive from Ellmann's sustained interest in these authors and projects. The sub-series can be said, at best, to be loosely organized, but fuller inventories for them follow the Series I inventory. We have also more fully inventoried the materials in the T.S. Eliot, Serge Eisenstein, and Sean O'Faolain folders, and those inventories are also present as an addenda here.
