Scope and Contents

The collection consists of original manuscript material of Edith Sitwell, including 30 letters to Zosia Kochanski, wife of noted Polish violinist Paul Kochanski. An additional 45 letters from Osbert Sitwell to Zosia Kochanski, and one letter from Georgia Sitwell to Mrs. Kochanski, and four letters from David Horner discussing Edith and Osbert are included.

Also included in the collection is material and correspondence relating to two biographies of Edith Sitwell: Geoffrey Elborn's Edith Sitwell: A biography; and Edith Sitwell: A unicorn among lions by Victoria Glendinning. The collection also includes John Pearson's correspondence, photographs, drafts and interviews for his book Facades: Edith, Osbert and Sacheverell Sitwell.

Biographical / Historical

Dame Edith Louisa Sitwell was born on September 7, 1887 in Scarborough, North Yorkshire. She was a British poet and critic. Her brothers Osbert and Sacheverell, also excelled as writers. she began publishing poetry in 1913. She is known for her dramatic style and exotic costumes. Some of her work was set to music. Some of her well known work includes: Bucolic Comedies, The Sleeping Beauty, and Troy Park. She died on December 9, 1964.
