John Bennett Shaw collection of John Steinbeck ephemera
Scope and Contents
Along with over 125 volumes of primary and secondary Steinbeck materials, the Steinbeck collection includes a set of signed advance galley proofs for the first edition of Steinbeck's 1937 novel Of Mice and Men as well as proofs for Grapes of Wrath. Another unusual item is the 1936 Christmas present from Steinbeck's publisher announcing the publication date for Of Mice and Men.

Biographical / Historical
John Ernst Steinbeck was born on February 27, 1902 in Salinas, California. He graduated from Salinas High School in 1919 and attended Stanford University. He left Standford without a degree and traveled to New York to begin his writing career. He returned to California to work and eventually married Carol Henning. Steinbeck's father loaned him money to support himself while he wrote. His first publication was "Tortilla Flats." He would go onto earn a Pulitzer Prize for his book "The Grapes of Wrath." He died on December 20, 1968.
