Scope and Contents
A group of letters (primarily from B. F. Sheffer to his son, Marion) regarding the state of employment in the Kern County, California oil fieds from 1913-1916 including many periods of unemployment, the morale and conditions of the oil workers, and much about Bakersfield's unsavory side as an oil town (e.g. prostitution, gambling, corruption of public officials, etc.). Mentioned are Standard Oil and Associated Oil companies. Other topics included in the letters are about the natural world and the local flora and fauna; and the family's gas well leases.
