Scope and Contents
Consists of the personal ephemera and photographs of Private 1st Class Hugo A. "Happy" Gruenberg of Ambulance Company 167, 117th Sanitary Train, 42nd (Rainbow) Division, American Expeditionary Forces.
The personal ephemera includes Gruenberg's diary kept during 1917-1918; soldier's pay record book; Gruenberg's dog tags and brass key on a leather thong, as well as one pair of regulation leather leggings; photocopied press cuttings of Gruenberg's obituaries and memorial and funeral record books; National Association of Rainbow Division Veterans memorabilia, veteran-related membership cards; and 7 Victrola records, one of which includes a recording of "Rainbow Division March."
The photographs include a variety of unidentified wartime scenes and servicemen (individual photos) and 2 albums containing wartime snapshots with autograph commentary and/or identification; a group photo of the 42nd (Rainbow) Division, taken in Tulsa, Oklahoma, 1927; snapshots of family and friends, as well as scenes from the Chelsea, Oklahoma area; a studio portrait of Gruenberg; and a photo album containing snapshots of family and friends, some with autograph identification.
Also included in the archive is the poster "Victory Medal Now Ready".
