Robert Bruce papers, 1863-1950
Scope and Contents
Consists of the source materials collected by Robert Bruce while researching his book, The Fighting Norths and Pawnee Scouts: Narratives and Reminiscences of Military Service on the Old Frontier. (Lincoln, Nebraska: Nebraska State Historical Society, [1932]. Materials dating from before 1900 are comprised of photographs or photostats of original materials obtained by Bruce during the course of his research. Included are original and photostat copies of correspondence between Bruce and Luther Hedden North concerning his experiences with the Pawnee Scouts, as well as correspondence between other individuals, and is arranged alphabetically by author. The correspondence dates from 1869-1950. Also included are handwritten and typed manuscripts, most of which are presumably by Bruce; photographs of both Frank Joshua and Luther Hedden North; photographs of various Native Americans; photographs of battle sites; military records pertaining to the Pawnee Scouts including muster rolls for 1865-1870; maps relating to the Dull Knife Battle in Wyoming in 1876 between the Cheyenne and the 4th US Cavalry of the Powder River Expedition forces; Photostats of treaties with the Pawnees; press cuttings; and a copy of Bruce's book.

Biographical / Historical
Members of Company A of the Nebraska Volunteers, US Army, were Pawnee Indians, commanded by Frank Joshua North and Luther Hedden North in the 1870s. While deployed throughout Nebraska and Wyoming, they saw action against the Cheyenne and were associated with the Black Hills Expedition in 1875. The Company was mustered out in 1877.
