Scope and Contents

Organized into 3 series:

Series 1: Correspondence consists of the following: D.H. Lawrence: 17 handwritten letters, 3 handwritten postcards, and a typed letter, 1918-1930.

Frieda Lawrence: 3 telegrams and 4 handwritten and carbon copy typeed letters to Willard Houghland, Mr. Mercer, Jake Zeitlin and others; a photostatic reproduction of an handwritten letter to "Auntie;" a handwritten letter from Alfred Stieglitz to Frieda Lawrence; and a telegram from Morris L. Ernst to Mabel Dodge Luhan. All date from 1934-1951.

Catherine Carswell: 1 handwritten letter to Millicent Beveridge (dated 1937); an handwritten letter to "Sir" (undated); and a photograph of "Aunt Milly," D. H. and Frieda Lawrence (housed in Series 3: Miscellaneous).

Willard Houghland: 1 typed letter from George W. Joel (The Dial Press) to Houghland; a typed letter from Merle Armitage to Houghland in reference to Armitage's article, "Taos Quartet;" and a press release in reference to Houghland's satisfaction at the dismissal of an obscenity charge against Lady Chatterly's Lover. All date from 1944-1950.

John Martin: 43 handwritten and typed letters and postcards from various individuals including Alan Clodd, Enid Hilton, Henry Miller, Roy Spencer, and Warren Roberts; a photocopy of a typed essay, "D. H. Lawrence and the Civilization of Touch" by Neal Metcalf; and a signed typed review by Nancy Cunard of Pinorman by Richard Aldington. All date from 1972-1975.

Edward David McDonald: 1 typescript from McDonald (The Writings of D.H. Lawrence, 1925-1930. A Bibliographic Supplement) to Mr. Hawk (incomplete date).

Series 2: Writings consists of handwritten, typed and carbon copy typed drafts of published and unpublished short stories, essays, and plays; a galley proof of a collection of letters between Lawrence and Martin Secker; pencil sketches for a set design; a foreword written for a bibliography of works by Lawrence; Derek Patmore's handwritten memoirs of Lawrence; a mimeograph radio broadcast script by Dorothy Baker; theatre programmes from various stage adaptations of Lawrence's works as well as posters, movie stills, and related materials from film adaptations; and photocopies of articles by D.H. Lawrence. All date from 1913-1977.

Series 3: Miscellaneous consists of a photograph of D.H. Lawrence at Black Sparrow and a reproduction of a studio portrait of D.H. Lawrence; a photograph of Mabel Dodge Luhan pictured with her husband; a photograph of "Aunt Milly" (Millicent Beveridge), D.H. Lawrence and Frieda Lawrence; a pencil drawing by Kai G. Gotzsche, featuring D.H. Lawrence, Knud Merrild and Gotzsche in New Mexico. Merrild and Gotzsche were Danish painters visiting with D.H. Lawrence in New Mexico, circa 1922-1923 (from the Catherine Carswell material).

Press cuttings of articles about Lawrence; programs and related materials for the 1970 Lawrence Country Festival of the Arts; exhibition catalogue of an exhibition of first editions and manuscripts from the D.H. Lawrence Collection of John E. Baker, Jr.; bibliographies and biographical data; souvenir postcards depicting the Lawrence family home in Eastwood and Haggs Farm; stationery and envelope with The Letters of D.H. Lawrence letterhead; an handwritten album which includes a miniature watercolor and handwritten inscription by Lawrence to Rabbi Ben Ezra Browning; a framed needlework of an Etruscan figure worked by Lawrence (color transparency available); a framed oil painting by Lawrence; a republication of the June 26, 1940 Artists and Writers edition of The Sante Fe New Mexican; a metal tray and wooden box, both painted by Lawrence; a reel-to-reel audio recording of a BBC interview with Frieda Lawrence about Lawrence; and 28 booksellers catalogues belonging to John Martin.
