Scope and Contents
Manuscripts, dead material, press cuttings and business correspondence of British writer and author of The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie.
Masterfile note: The Muriel Spark papers consist of handwritten and typed manuscripts, dead material, and press cutting of reviews of Muriel Spark's major works dating from 1957-1988, as well as collected short stories and poetry. Business correspondence dating from 1942-1988 includes letters to and from Muriel Spark, her publishers, editors, and literary agents; people to whom she corresponded for research; two letters from her son, Robin; and a draft fragment of a letter from Muriel Spark to Graham Greene. Miscellaneous material includes draft book reviews; a transcript of an interview between Sara Frankel and Muriel Spark; draft obituary for Alfred Noyes; and various notes and unidentified draft fragments. Photographs are mostly publicity photos of Muriel Spark. Press cuttings are of articles about Muriel Spark and general subjects.
The Muriel Spark Manuscripts, housed in 86 document boxes, consist primarily of autograph and typescript manuscripts, dead pre-publication material, and press cuttings relating to her major works between 1957 to 1988. The collection includes some business correspondence dating from 1942 to 1988. The preponderance of the material within the collection was acquired from Howard Woolmer and Bertram Rota in 1983 and later, the last in 1990.
