Scope and Contents

This collection consists of articles and illustrations by William Roderick James excised from Sunset Magazine, Scribner's, The Saturday Evening Post, The Bookman and other periodicals dating from 1920 to 1932. Stories such as these by Will James generally appeared first in serial installments in magazines such as those listed above, and thus these articles often represent the first appearance of James' work. Seventy-nine items in all are included.

The collection is organized into 3 series: 1. Biographical ; 2. Stories written and illustrated by Will James ; and 3. Illustrations of other author's works and individual illustrations. The material is arranged alphabetically by title of the story or illustration.

Biographical / Historical

William Roderick James, commonly known as Will James, was born Joseph Ernest Nephtali Dufault in 1892. Author of 24 books and scores of articles, James is best known for his horse story, Smoky (1926) which won him the Newberry Medal for Most Distinguished contribution to American Literature for children, and for his autobiography, Lone Cowboy. James, through his stories and illustrations, chronicled the life of the American cowboy of the early 20th century.
