Scope and Contents

J. Howard Woolmer collecton of Poetry Bookshop research materials consists largely of Woolmer's research materials and pre-publication drafts of the bibliography but includes PBS manuscripts and ephemeral printing. The collection is organized into two series: Series 1: Correspondence: Joy Grant: letters from British writers and collegues of Harold Monro in reply to Grant as she wrote Harold Monro and the Poetry Bookshop (London: Routledge and Kegan Paul, 1967) including correspondents J.R. Ackerley, Conrad Aiken, Edmund Blunden, T.S. Eliot, John Masefield, Herbert Read, and others dating from 1961-1967. Harold and Alida Monro: correspondence between Harold or Alida Monro and others pertaining to Bookshop business dating from 1913-1935. J. Howard Woolmer: Woolmer's correspondence with publishers, printers, collectors, and libraries as he compiled The Poetry Bookshop, 1912-1935, A Biibliography dating from 1973-1988. Included are revised typescript and a marked set of page proofs, photo-negatives and prints of items used to illustrate the bibliography.

Series 2: Poetry Bookshop papers General: prospectus of the Poetry Bookshop; Poetry Bookshop catalogues; photocopy of a plan to convert the Poetry Bookshop into a limited liability company; press cuttings and catalogues about Harold Monro. J. Howard Woolmer and he Poetry Bookshop, 1912-1935, A Biibliography : research materials and note cards for Woolmer's bibliography; handwritten, typed and photocopied typescript pre-publication drafts; photographic reproductions for proposed illustrations; photocopy of a partial page proof; photocopied galley proof. Claud Lovat Fraser: printer's proofs and ghost prints, as well as proofs of the illustrations for Haldane MacFall, The Book of Claud Lovat Fraser (London: J.M. Dent, 1923): page proofs and trial press runs for color prints; printer's proof of the first edition; self-portrait by Fraser; Fraser's signed sketch of a scene at a fair; mock-up of the rhyme sheet, "Vespers," with Fraser's original ink drawings. The collection was assembled by bookseller J. Howard Woolmer as he compiled The Poetry Bookshop, 1912-1935, A Bibliography (Revere, Pennsylvania: Woolmer/Brotherson, 1988).
