Scope and Contents
Three volume handwritten diary. Vol I [address book]: Thursday, May 2, 1918 - Monday, May 13, 1918. 24 pages of mss entries, 24 lines per page, ~ 2000 words. Vol II: July 11, 1918 - September 7, 1918. 54 pp of mss entries, 24 lines per page, ~ 6000 words. 2 typed sheets with entries: "War Warnings, September 2nd, 1918" and "Extract taken from ship's log July 25, 1918.” Tipped in newspaper extract, "German Taken By Amexes Shoots Sniping Comrades." Laid-in a typed page, apparently from the Captain, providing a 'to do' list in his absence [e.g., "Have my room painted", which the diarist later describes]. Vol III: Sunday, September 29, 1918 - Wednesday, November 20, 1918. "Left Philadelphia PA. Sunday Sept 29, 1918" 31 pages of mss entries, 23 lines per page, ~ 2500 words. Prescription chit, dated Nov 11, 1918, tipped in. Laid-in mounted b/w photograph, 5-7/8" x 3", presumed to be of the diarist [Photograph depicts a young male 2nd Class YN; Vol III records on Nov. 13 - 18, "Around 12 am the Captain called me up in his office and told me it was alright for me to take an examination for Chief Yeoman.". 6-7/8" x 4". Government issue green cloth notebooks, with Vol I stating on the front cover: "The ship left New York, Sat. 13, 1918. Arrived at St. Nazaire, France Wed. July, 31, 1918." Entries, which appear daily, range in detail from an account of stolen stores from the ship's canteen, concluding with "This makes the second night that there was no liberty.", to the more mundane, "Weather. Clear."
